In honor of World Teachers’ Day on Oct. 5, we’d like to recognize GSD member Annette Licitra who works with the American Federation of Teachers that is sending more than two dozen AFT members to help in Puerto Rico. More than 300 skilled workers from AFL-CIO unions are volunteering to lend a hand.
“Most people think the American Federation of Teachers is all teachers, but we also represent school nurses and many other healthcare professionals, from lab techs to doctors,” said Annette.
The AFT represents 40,000 educators in Puerto Rico, members of the Asociación de Maestros de Puerto Rico (AMPR). In a press release, they stated that they have been engaged in providing aid, financial assistance, and support since the hurricane hit by working to get schools opened as community centers and providing and coordinating the distribution of supplies.
“To the people of Puerto Rico, tu lucha es mi lucha; your fight is our fight. We will be with you every step of the way to ensure our members and the people of Puerto Rico are cared for, the island is rebuilt, and public schools are reopened,” said AFT President Randi Weingarten.
